FAQ

Frequently asked questions about our services.
What is the difference between Hula and Tahitian dancing?
There is a common misconception that Hula is slow and Tahitian is fast. The difference between Hula and Tahitian is simply that Hula is from Hawaiʻi and Tahitian is from Tahiti. Therefore, they will have difference languages and costume reflected in the performances. Both cultural dances can be done as a fast or slow performance. This depends solely on the tempo (how fast or slow) the music accompaniment is.

For a Tahitian performance, we will need a minimum of two musicians, one Ukulele player and one Tahitian drummer. For a Hula performance we will need a minimum of one musician and one Ukulele player.

What do you recommend?
We structure our offerings to be flexible to the individual event because we understand that every event is unique. We would be happy to discuss the best options for your specific vision. It is helpful to get a budget to work from with the specifics of what you have in mind.

We always recommend having more than one musician to achieve a full and authentic Hawaiian sound. Having two or more musicians allows for the blending of the vocals as well as the instruments, providing the harmonies and tones that we associate with Hawaiian music.

Having a Duo (2 musicians) normally will include Ukulele and Guitar. A Trio (3 musicians), will include Ukulele, Guitar, and Bass.

With that being said, we would recommend 2-3 Musicians, 3-4 Hula dancers, and a Fire knife performance with 1-2 Fire knife dancers and 1 drummer. If you had a budget in mind, we can make more specific recommendations and explain your many options.

How long is the Fire Knife performence?
Fire Knife dancing is similar to a fireworks show. While it may sound like a short period of time (10-15 minutes), the visual performance is so spectacular that it feels a lot longer while experiencing it. In Fire Knife competitions, the performances last 3 to 5 minutes, so our performances are longer than the standard norm. The amount of time that the fire lasts is based on how long the Fire Knife implement stays lit. A Fire Knife implement basically consists of a fuel soaked cloth wrapped around a stick. We approximate about a 10 minute-performance followed by a 5 minute-photo opportunity for your guests, and book a total time of 15 minutes.

As for the length of a fire knife performance, it really depends on the amount of Fire knife dancers you hire. 1-2 dancers is about 10 minutes, 3-4 dancers is about 15 minutes, and so forth. We book the time for 15 minutes regardless. The guests can always have a photo op with the remaining time.
